Ultraviolet Sterilization for Escape Room Guest Health and Safety

Gateway Escape Rooms WILL be reopening real soon. As we get ready, we want to share with you some of the additional cleanliness steps we will be doing for the first few months for the health and safety of our guests and our staff.

We have always focused on cleanliness – every shift we designate either a “Queen of Clean” or “Sultan of Sanitation” to make sure the rooms are tidy and sanitary. We use Norwex cloths – high-quality microfiber cloths that remove contaminants, soil and pathogens without harsh chemicals. We use a limited amount of disinfectants for heavy-use surfaces like in the restrooms. Here’s how we are stepping up our already impressive game:

The first thing we will be doing is taking all the props and fixtures that are handled, and after wiping them down with Norwex, we’ll be placing them for sanitation in a purpose-built ultraviolet light cabinet.

Ultraviolet light has been in use for decades for disinfection. When your humble correspondent was in high-school shop class in the early 80s, all the safety glasses were placed into a cabinet and a timer set for a few minutes. The ultraviolet light clobbered any and all pathogens. If you got pink-eye, it wasn’t from shop class.

We want to leave the commercial units for health care professionals so we, as is our want, are repurposing a vintage metal cabinet to create our UV sterilization cabinet. You can follow our progress through photos. It’ll be ready to go by the time we are open for business.

In addition to the cabinet where props are sanitized, we are building a set of floor lamps – again out of repurposed materials – so we can use ultraviolet light to sanitize the rooms where people will play. Our team will wheel in the lamps, activate them and step out. In about 15 minutes the surfaces – already wiped down – will be ready for the next group to safely “escape”.

Finally, our team will be monitoring their own health, and will wear face masks. Our guests are encouraged to wear them. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments and we’ll get back to you there. Thanks so much for your support, and check back for more pre-open progress.
